70th day of build. (10 weeks) We got to the property just as the power guys were finishing up with the transformer. Now they can hook up temporary power once everything's inspected.
Month: August 2017
69th day of build. Yeah, they weren't happy with us, but we had them dig up the 3/4-inch pipe from the meter and put in the 1-inch stuff. Then we checked the fitting to make sure everything was on the up and up.
Who's Eichler? A design genius, that's who. Well, maybe some history is in order. Joseph Eichler wasn't a designer, but a real estate developer in California in the 1950s. His family lived for a short time in a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home when he was younger, which greatly influenced his work. In a very small … Continue reading Eichler Influence
62nd day of build. (2 months) After the drama of yesterday (Monday) and the sorry-looking basement shovel footings, L.M. showed up around 7:30 a.m. this morning (Tuesday) to make sure they were done correctly. To his surprise, there were several workers there, using way more precise measurements and actually following the plans. Woo-hoo! He didn't … Continue reading Basement Floor Pour
61st day of build. We found out how they will fix the garage footing problems, but the shovel footings for the basement are still woefully off, even after L.M. went out last weekend and marked everything for them. We are tremendously worried that the too-shallow and incorrectly marked footings will just stay as they are, … Continue reading Footing Fiascoes
58th day of build. Today the forms were put up for the garage stem walls, and this is where we noticed that the footings which were poured beforehand were nowhere near plumb with the house walls. The forms guys obviously noticed it because they put the forms where they needed to be, not where the … Continue reading Houston, We Have a Problem
57th day of build. (about 8 weeks) Rebar in the basement floor; forms ready for the garage stem wall. Those shallow footings are not correct according to the engineer plans. Our builder says the workers couldn't find the plans so they winged it. He says he'll set them straight before the pour.
Okay, so women-dominated workplaces get a bad rap for having lots of drama. But I've been surprised at the drama I've encountered in home construction. Manly men using all sorts of melodrama, just with more colorful language. This melodrama was on display this week when we questioned the size of the water pipe that goes … Continue reading Drama Queens in Home Construction: Please Don’t Lie About Things Which are Easily Verified
51st day of build. The garage footings were poured, so now L.M. can see the scope of his domain. Also, the water main was run to the house. We are a little wary that it's a 3/4 inch line, so we're trying to get in touch with the builder on that. The trench and the … Continue reading Footings, Electric, Water
49th day of build. (7 weeks) Kinda boring, just the forms for the garage footings. Hopefully they'll pour soon. It's been a bit of a rainy week, so that has slowed things down a day or two.
